WEST PARIS - Beginning Monday, July 13 and ending Wednesday, December 30, the West Paris Public Library is honored to present “The Nature of Trees,” an inspiring exhibition of pen-and-ink drawings in black-and-white and color by West Paris artist Mick Liimatta. Visitors to West Paris Public Library can view his work whenever the Library is open.
Artist Statement
I was born and raised in West Paris and graduated from West Paris High School. From 1965 to 1969, I served in the U.S. Navy. I married Linda Bradeen, and we have two children. After returning home, I worked at various jobs – in about 1970, I enrolled at U.M.A. after taking drawing lessons from Lajos Matolcsy. I received an Associate Degree in Art, and in the mid-80s I returned to school at U.S.M. and received a BFA. I made a living as a self-employed, self-taught truck letterer, pinstriper, and airbrush painter. I have drawn my entire adult life. Pen and ink are my preferred medium, also black-and-white and colored acrylic inks. Trees are what I am most interested in, and the process of making marks, -scratching really, that describe the twists and turns of the limbs and branches searching for the sun. I use pen and ink because it is truthful, with no backing up - ability and inexperience existing on the same page. This will be my second show at the Library. Other than my senior show, these are my first. I am grateful to the Library for this opportunity.
